At 1,818 meters (5,965 feet), Pico do Arieiro offers some of the most dramatic views in all of Madeira. It's included in virtually every East route jeep tour, and for good reason.

What to Expect

The Drive Up

The road to Pico do Arieiro is paved but winding, climbing from sea level to nearly 2,000 meters in about 45 minutes. Your jeep handles the hairpin turns easily, but those prone to motion sickness should take precautions.

At the Summit

Most tours stop for 30-60 minutes at the top. You'll find:

Viewing platforms with 360° panoramas

Small café (coffee, snacks, souvenirs)

Restrooms

Hiking trail start (to Pico Ruivo—not included in jeep tours)

On clear days, you can see:

Pico Ruivo (Madeira's highest peak)

Weather Considerations

Above the Clouds

Pico do Arieiro often sits above the cloud layer, creating magical sea-of-clouds views. However, it can also be:

Cold: 10-15°C colder than Funchal

Windy: Gusts can be strong

Foggy: Clouds sometimes engulf the peak

Best Conditions

Sunrise: Spectacular but requires early tour

Morning: Often clearest before afternoon clouds build

After rain: Exceptional visibility

What to Wear

Essential:

Warm jacket (even in summer)

Closed-toe shoes with grip

Layers you can add/remove

Recommended:

Sunglasses

Sunscreen (UV is intense at altitude)
